Statement Regarding Eatonville Care CentrePublished on May 26, 2020
Today, I was shocked, saddened and angered by the Canadian Armed Forces report on the five long-term care homes where the military has been assisting, which includes Eatonville Care Centre in Etobicoke.
I want to offer my prayers, condolences and thoughts to the families of those who have passed away and those who have suffered through these conditions. I also want to thank the military and other care workers who have put themselves in harm’s way to care for the vulnerable at Eatonville.
An active investigation has already begun based on the Canadian Armed Forces report. In addition to continued regular inspections, the Ministry of Long-Term Care Inspections Branch will immediately investigate specific critical incidents referred to in the report.
The government has previously announced an independent commission into Ontario's long-term care system. It is my hope that this commission will give families the answers they deserve and to ensure similar circumstances never occur again. We have been clear that the long term care system is broken. It is our job as a government to fix it.
